A search engine is a platform designed to search for information on the internet or intranet where the search results are presented in a list of results and are often called hits. The search results may be in form of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Most search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Search engines operate algorithmically or combine algorithmic and human input. Search engines are important because:

  • They help supplement traditional library services

  • Avails opportunities for new library services
